South Gate residents interested in enhancing their digital skills can participate in a free two-day online technology training session, with some participants eligible to receive free laptops.

The training will be held Oct. 13 and 14. It is designed to help beginners navigate today’s digital world in a safe and welcoming environment. The event is suitable for individuals with little or no technology experience, as well as those who want to feel more comfortable using everyday devices and online services.

Instructors will provide step-by-step guidance and hands-on activities to make learning technology engaging and approachable.

USE OF SMARTPHONES & TABLETS
Participants will learn how to navigate the internet safely and effectively, understand the basics of using smartphones and tablets, and recognize common scams. The session will also cover the history and evolution of technology and include interactive games to reinforce the skills presented during the training.

“No experience needed—just bring your curiosity,” organizers emphasize, noting that the program is aimed at beginners of all ages.

FREE LAPTOPS
In addition to the training, some participants may be eligible to receive a laptop. To qualify, attendees must be current residents of the City of South Gate and complete the required Laptop Needs Assessment Form. Laptop eligibility is determined by residency and demonstrated need, and only a limited number of computers are available.

Participation in the training implies consent to being photographed and recorded on video.

Organizers say that this free session offers community members an opportunity to develop practical digital skills that support everyday activities, such as safely accessing information online, using mobile devices, and identifying potential scams.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
For residents who feel uncertain about technology, the training provides a beginner-friendly environment where they can ask questions, practice new skills, and build confidence without needing prior experience.

The nonprofit organization LearnBasicTech.org will lead the training session.
